Genesis previews its first crossover with the GV80 prototype

Genesis’s new prototype is an SUV that previews the design language the brand could apply to the production model arriving next year

Genesis broke away from Hyundai very recently and became a Premium sub-brand, so more and more models are being launched under this badge. In New York the brand showed its luxury saloons, but also a preview of what will soon be an SUV. In fact, Genesis has two vehicles of this type planned for 2020, so they are presumably based on this model and will feature various modifications to turn it into each of those two models.

But there is another thing that makes this SUV prototype quite appealing for a market that is beginning to open up to electric cars more actively. It is a model that will run on a fuel cell, so hydrogen will provide the energy needed to power this spectacular vehicle.

The image of the SUV also aims to establish the brand’s design language, something the company is still working on in order to definitively distance itself from the main brand. The grille stands out, with a metal mesh texture, the door handles are integrated into the bodywork, and the 23-inch wheels give a truly spectacular look that makes the car genuinely striking.

Although we know it will have this fuel cell drivetrain, we don’t yet know what its specifications will be. What we do know is that Hyundai already has experience with cars using this type of drivetrain, so this will be a model similar to those already on the market, with the logical changes needed to adapt them to the new developments in the sector. Inside, there will be a 22-inch OLED display and digital instruments to improve control of the car. In addition, each of the four passengers will have a multimedia screen at their disposal.

The production version of this model could arrive next year, and we will have more information on it within a few months. What do you think of this particular vehicle, which could soon reach the market?
