Geneva Motor Show 2012: Opel

The most powerful Astra in its history and the small Mokka based on the Corsa are its main new additions. The Insignia also receives the new 200 hp Bi-Turbo engine.

It’s clear that this year Geneva has compact cars for every taste. But on top of that, most brands have brought their most ambitious versions. Opel has not fallen short and, following its traditional restraint in the launch calendar, has finally presented the Astra OPC. However, its look and certain specifications were revealed months ago, so it has not been a surprise.

To enhance its new image, Opel has fitted the Astra OPC with a huge air intake in the front bumper, lowered the suspension, fitted alloy wheels of 19 inches, modified the rear diffuser which houses new trapezoidal exhaust outlets, and added a “discreet” spoiler on the tailgate. The cabin is characterised by the sports steering wheel with the “OPC” badge, lighter seats and leather upholstery with contrasting coloured stitching.

Under the bonnet, the Astra OPC features a turbocharged 2.0 “Family-II” engine that produces 280 hp of power and 400 Nm of maximum torque. According to Opel, it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in less than six seconds and reach 250 km/h. Like the standard GTC, it benefits from HiPerStrut technology, which allows it to offer smooth steering even at high engine revs.

Mechanically it is distinguished by the new Brembo brakes, the “OPC” mode in the FlexRide suspension system configuration, and a mechanical limited-slip differential created specifically for this version. As an option, a package called “Aero” costing around 1,200 euros will be offered, adding a new spoiler, widened skirts and 20-inch wheels. The first units will be delivered in July and can already be ordered for a little over 32,000 euros.

But compact cars are not the only thing Opel lives on (however hard GM makes it), so the gap in the crossover range below the Antara is filled by the Mokka. This model, which we first saw at the Detroit Show in January as the Buick Encore, shares the platform of the Corsa. We gave you its first details last month, but in Geneva we were able to confirm that it promises to be a good car.

While the design can be appreciated according to each person’s taste, the interior leaves less room for differing opinions in a positive sense. Opel has done a good job on its main aspects, such as the quality of the finish, on a par with that of the Astra or the Meriva. Likewise, its space for five occupants is generous and does not “torture” tall people in the rear seats. It will offer an optional intelligent all-wheel drive, which is only activated if it detects a drop of more than 50% in grip.

In terms of equipment, it will not go without new technologies either, such as the Adaptive Front Lighting system, which can automatically modify the intensity and type of light depending on visibility conditions or if it detects that other vehicles are approaching head-on. And of course it will feature the well-known set of front cameras Opel Eye. It will go on sale in the last four months of this year.
