Good news: the AP-68 will be free of tolls from 2026

In 2026 the A-68 motorway between Bilbao and Zaragoza will be toll-free, joining the motorways that have been freed of tolls since 2018.

In recent years we have been seeing that several toll motorways are no longer charging drivers to use them, making it possible to travel across Spain at much lower cost. In 2018 the concessions on the AP-1, the AP-4 between Seville and Cadiz, several sections of the AP-7 between Alicante and Barcelona, and the AP-2 from Zaragoza to the Mediterranean coast came to an end, and from next year another motorway will be removing the toll charge.

This is the AP-68 between Zaragoza and Bilbao. In 2026 the concession held by the company that operates this motorway expires, so the toll barriers will be permanently lifted and drivers will be allowed to use this stretch without having to pay a toll. The plans of the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility involve opening more roads to free traffic.

In 2029 it is planned that tolls will be removed on the AP-6 motorway and its branches AP-61 and AP-51, so these roads, which carry very heavy traffic, will be permanently freed. Another toll motorway that will also benefit from the actions of the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility is the Alicante ring road section of the AP-7.

This section is being fully subsidised by the Ministry, although it is a provisional measure. In 2024 this decision was taken to relieve traffic on the A-70, which has been used to avoid driving on the AP-7 in this section, which remains a toll road. This measure will continue to apply until 15 February 2026, although the Ministry is working to eliminate the tolls permanently.

At present, there are still 20 toll motorways in Spain, totalling around 1,500 kilometres of toll roads. The government’s plans involve gradually freeing these sections as the private concessions come to an end.
