Green NCAP has already determined which cars are the cleanest on the market, do you want to know them?

Green NCAP is an organisation that examines new models on the market and gives them a rating based on their environmental performance

Green NCAP is a non-governmental organisation that is responsible for examining the cars on the market to determine whether they comply with the emissions regulations currently in force. Its main aim is to ensure that we breathe cleaner air, and to do this it examines new vehicles to assess certain aspects of their performance and assign a score.

Just like the Euro NCAP safety rating, it is based on a five-star scale, with five stars being the best rating and 0 stars the lowest. To give you some background, these are the different scores that Green NCAP awards.

  • Five stars: This is the highest score and is given to cars that meet all the measures to prevent emissions. It also takes into account low fuel or energy consumption and whether the car is equipped with systems to eliminate polluting emissions.
  • Four stars: The next level recognises that the car complies with emissions regulations very efficiently and is properly equipped to eliminate emissions.
  • Three stars: If the car has no problems with polluting emissions and its equipment is adequate, though not outstanding, it receives this score. It is a car that meets Green NCAP standards, but it still has room for improvement.
  • Two stars: The environmental performance of this car is acceptable, but it has no specific equipment to reduce emissions or consumption.
  • One star: The car has poor environmental performance and consumes too much. However, Green NCAP considers that the brand still has room to improve these aspects.
  • Zero stars: If a car receives a score of 0 stars, it means its consumption is excessive and its polluting emissions are very high. Its equipment is the minimum required and is not always efficient.

The three best-rated cars by Green NCAP in 2019

  • Nissan LEAF: The small city car Nissan was the best rated by Green NCAP and the most environmentally efficient of this 2019 list.
  • Opel Corsa Motores 02

  • Opel Corsa: The Opel Corsa, equipped with a 1.0-litre petrol engine, has 4 stars. Its clean air coefficient is a considerable 9 out of 10, although its energy efficiency index reached 6 out of 10.
  • Mercedes C220d Tres Estrellas Green Ncap

  • Mercedes Benz Clase C: A surprise, since this model is a diesel vehicle and we all know the bad reputation this type of fuel has. Its clean air coefficient is 10 out of 10, which puts it on a par with the Nissan LEAF. Its energy efficiency, however, drops to 5.3 out of 10, which is why it has been given three stars, a result that is not bad at all.
