Honda abandons the development of clean diesel engines and city cars in Japan

Honda has never really warmed to diesel engines, even though not long ago it had opened a new division of the brand that would study their implementation in small models, mainly aimed at Japan.

The problem is that this initiative had little chance, since Honda (like Toyota) became embroiled in a hybrid war, from which it is now hard to escape. Furthermore, diesel cars in Japan account for less than 1% of its total car fleet.

The original plan was for Honda to manufacture diesel engines, low-emission engines and city cars for its local market, also with eco-friendly engines, at its Yorii plant near Tokyo. All of these plans have been partially cancelled or delayed.

What the brand will do is build hybrid cars, more than anyone else in the world. The design and development of eco-friendly mini cars will go ahead, but only for the Japanese market, while diesel has been definitively abandoned by the brand.
