Is the BMW Series 1 M Safety Car from MotoGP a hint at a future customised 1 M?

We recently saw the beautiful BMW 1 M Safety Car for the motorcycle world championship, and now some comments are circulating online suggesting that BMW could be considering a new variant of the 1 M, which might carry the GTS name, in honour of the M3 GTS. Just as that Canadian model we saw recently.

The idea wouldn’t be far-fetched, since the Safety Car shown has simply been prepared with modified suspension and exhausts, carbon-fibre parts have been added, and the engine hasn’t been touched at all. That suggests a new model with the same engine as the 1 M, but with some additional personalisation features, would not be out of tune with the coupé we already know.

The 1 M doesn’t need to be dressed up in the brand’s colours or fitted with roof lights. But if the 1 M is already appealing with 345 CV, it doesn’t take much imagination to guess that more power in a 1 M GTS would be an excellent idea from BMW. It wouldn’t be the first time a safety car has a road-going counterpart.

Of course, all of this is speculation from those of us eager to see more of the 1 M. BMW has made no statement either for or against, so everything rests in the hands of the people in Munich.
