Jeep has unveiled the first official photos of the next generation of the Cherokee. This crossover is expected to reach international dealerships between late 2013 and early 2014, following its debut at the New York International Auto Show at the end of March.

Compared with the previous generation, the brand’s executives claim they have managed to develop a crossover with more dynamic on-road handling that also offers fuel savings of up to 45%. These improvements are mainly due to the use of the platform of the Dodge Dart and the Alfa Romeo Giulietta.

In terms of styling, the new Jeep Cherokee 2014 is hard to judge. The chrome grille together with the front light clusters are unusual, with curved, rounded shapes. We cannot comment on the rear, as we have no images to show it. As always, some people will like this generation while others will prefer the one currently on sale. There’s no accounting for taste.

On the mechanical side, the unknowns multiply. Jeep has not wanted to reveal any information, but rumours point to a four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 2.4 litres and a 3,200 cm3 V6. Both would be petrol, although for Europe two diesel engines are expected, one of 2.0 litres and another of 3.0 litres of displacement.
