Lexus RX200t, the turbocharged petrol engine will also be fitted to the new RX

Lexus has announced the addition of a new mechanical variant to the range of its recently redesigned SUV, the RX.

This is the RX200t, which will feature a turbocharged petrol engine, becoming the first RX in history with a turbo engine.

The Lexus RX was fully redesigned earlier this month, presenting its fourth generation in Shanghai. It is therefore a completely new product that embodies the new ideas Lexus wants to convey in the years ahead. To this end, it has created an all-new car, unrelated to the previous one, with spectacular styling and an interior where quality is the predominant note.

However, the Japanese firm is aware that if the technical side does not measure up, the efforts in styling will be of no use, so it has decided to take the step and take a risk, fitting a turbo engine to an RX for the first time, thinking above all of markets such as Europe, where large naturally aspirated V6 engines are in ever-decreasing demand.

The engine that powers the RX200t is the same one already presented in the NX, the smallest SUV. It is a four-cylinder unit with a 2-litre displacement and turbocharger forced induction. Equipped with the latest technical features such as direct injection, variable valve timing on both intake and exhaust, liquid cooling for the intercooler, and a low-inertia turbo that minimises response lag.

The result, power in excess of 230 CV – Lexus has not specified the exact output – combined with a 6-speed automatic transmission, will give an SUV that can finally take on its European rivals without complexes or fear. Lexus has decided to make the RX200t a global model, meaning it will be sold in all the markets where Lexus currently has a commercial presence.
