LiDAR technology will guide Volvo towards autonomous driving
Autonomous driving continues on its path towards automating the task of operating a vehicle, with the incorporation of new systems such as LiDARVolvo technology.
The removal of human involvement at the wheel of a car and the management, through artificial intelligence, of how a car is guided continues to advance despite the global emergency situation we are living through.
Thus, together with the manufacturer of Scandinavian origin integrated into the Chinese Geely consortium, one of the manufacturers always linked to enhancing safety, both for the occupants of its vehicles and for other road users, announces the incorporation of the laser guidance system that will be present in its cars whose architecture is based on the SPA-2 construction platform from 2022 onwards.

This equipment will be integrated inside the vehicle and will be located at the front of the roof of the Volvo cars that will be equipped with a set of cameras that will have a laser guidance device, developed and manufactured by the specialist manufacturer Luminar.
Together, the system will monitor the exterior of the car in 3 dimensions. In this way, the car will be able to drive semi-autonomously in environments such as motorways thanks to the Highway Pilot function.

Thanks to LiDAR, the Volvo vehicles that incorporate it will be able to update automatically and progressively improve and expand the degree and level of autonomous driving, in step with the advance of these technologies, thanks to the hardware managed by this equipment.
Together with other devices such as signal recognition cameras, ultrasonic radars and parking sensors, and other driver assistance systems, or ADAS, the programming of the Volvo equipped with the LiDAR system must manage all the information in order to adjust the car’s response to the situation and to the driving context, which will be digitised in the form of a virtual representation via a map.
