Lincoln is considering launching a model based on the Mustang

Mustang 1

Lincoln is currently designing its next batch of products for the second half of the decade. Its goal is to become a luxury brand that covers every possible segment in order to compete under better conditions with its rivals. The One Ford strategy of its parent company gives Lincoln the ability to draw on practically any model that carries the blue oval of those sold in North America.

Among them is the all-new Mustang, which, as Lincoln’s global sales chief, Matt VanDyke, has pointed out, is not ruled out as an option to expand the offering of Ford’s luxury brand. The idea would be to use the sports car’s technical architecture to create a differentiated model in keeping with Lincoln’s image.

This would not be the first time the Mustang has had siblings. The first two generations of the Mercury Cougar, built between 1967 and 1973, were based on Ford’s sports car, as was the Mercury Capri built on the Fox platform, which was sold between 1979 and 1986. Although the popularity of both fell well short of what the still-current Mustang enjoys, neither those two Cougars nor the Capri of the eighties went as unnoticed as other models that the American market showed no mercy toward.

Before this refined reinterpretation of the Mustang, Lincoln will renew the MKX (twin of Ford’s Edge) next year, and in 2016 it will be the turn of the high-end MKS saloon, whose successor is not confirmed to keep that name. The rest of the novelties to be introduced between now and 2020 still remain on the table, according to VanDyke.
