Long live the off-roader Mercedes-Benz Class G! The electric version is already on its way
The legendary off-roader from the German brand will join the electrified car lineup thanks to the electric Mercedes-Benz G version
One of the classic off-roaders and one of the last true options among high-performance vehicles for off-road activities, the Mercedes-Benz Class G has withstood the onslaught of trends for more than 4 decades of history, climbing over any SUV that claims to have an outdoorsy attitude.
A classic for lovers of thrills off the asphalt that sees how, not only its most radical version, the Mercedes-AMG G63, resists the regulatory storm that is suffocating the most powerful engines, and that maintains its power thanks to its dependence, in every sense, on fossil fuels.
But if a new chapter is to be added to the story of this car, it must adapt it to the new era of the automotive industry, that of electrification.
And, far from taking half measures, as is required by the rugged, radical and exclusive character of the Mercedes-Benz Class G, partial hybridization could be a temporary and light option to reduce, above all, its emissions of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, but this would not be its best asset.
That is why, between all and nothing, between black and white, grey is not an option for the German brand, which has decided to bet everything on the past, present and, above all, future of its off-roader par excellence, and is already working on an electric version of the Mercedes-Benz G.
Unequivocal confirmation
And that is because, as we indicated, this vehicle, which has set a benchmark both inside and outside the brand, does not mess about and, far from rumours or leaks giving rise to speculation about its future, it was none other than Ola Källenius, current CEO of Daimler AG, who confirmed the arrival of the electric variant of the off-roader in the Mercedes-Benz lineup.
Far from offering a more off-road version of the Mercedes-Benz EQC, the star brand has kept its faith in a car that, at 40 years old, is not going through any existential crisis.
He, for his part, remains firm in his principles and, like a good “forty-something,” takes better care of himself than ever, incorporating all the latest-generation technology and innovations while keeping his character and personality almost intact.
That is why the new electric Mercedes-Benz G will be just that: a Mercedes-Benz Class G with a powertrain and energy storage equipment that uses, depends on and stores electricity.
Although it has not been specified when the electric Mercedes-Benz G will go on sale, we do not expect it before 2021, as part of the manufacturer’s strategic plan which foresees launching electrified variants of all models on sale before 2022, 10 of which will be 100 percent electric cars.
