Mahindra e20 from 8,500 euros

After Reva was absorbed by Mahindra&Mahindra and turned into Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles, little has been heard about this brand of electric city cars that began simply as Reva. The most recent prototypes presented, the Reva NXG and NXR, had looked promising. Until now.

Mahindra has unveiled the e20, an electric car that is something of a continuation of the Reva-i, Reva’s most famous and best-known model, which has sold a few units in Great Britain, Spain and other countries. With a very poor aesthetic, it will reach the Indian market for the equivalent of 8,500 euros.

The e20 is not at all attractive and I think it is one of the ugliest cars presented this year. Its small wheels do nothing for it, and some very strange shapes (don’t miss the side view) help make the whole thing very unappealing. I don’t know why an electric car almost always has to be synonymous with being unpleasant to look at, but that is the reality.

The second thing to mention is the e20’s electric powertrain, a 19 kW (26 CV) unit and a torque of 53 Nm, with a top speed of 80 km/h and a range that will reach 100 kilometres.

The equipment is said to be fairly complete and even interesting, featuring a touchscreen, integrated GPS, rear-view camera, Bluetooth and an app to monitor the charging status, switch the climate control on or off, and also check the location of nearby charging points, all from the smartphone.

We don’t know whether it will reach Europe; perhaps in 2014? In any case, it will be a good option, if the price can stay close to what is being asked for the e20 in India.
