Maserati will launch an electric two-seater Alfieri in 2020
Maserati has recently confirmed that it will produce an electric car by 2020, and now we know exactly what it will look like.
The Italian company told Just Auto of its intention to build an electric version of its Alfieri model, a two-seater concept first unveiled at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show. “The Alfieri is being designed to compete with the Porsche 911, although it will be closer in size to the Jaguar F-Type,” said the Italian brand’s general manager, Peter Denton.

The petrol version with the V6 engine of the Alfieri will go on sale from 2019, which represents a three-year delay compared with the original launch date. Initially, Maserati considered fitting a V8 engine for the combustion version, but environmental regulations forced the brand to opt for a smaller powerplant.

As for the electric variant of the Alfieri, details such as the price or the mechanics it will use are still unknown, although it is expected to have outstanding performance given its Italian pedigree. Its arrival is set for 2020.

Fiat, the parent brand of Maserati within the FCA car group, is a company reluctant to enter the electric vehicle industry. Sergio Marchionne, CEO of the group, has said he does not know how to make the Tesla business model work for its products, although he has also added that “there is nothing Elon Musk’s company can do that Maserati or Fiat cannot do.” Nevertheless, we will have to wait until 2020 for Maserati to launch its electric two-seater, and who would have imagined three years ago that Tesla would manage to take 400,000 reservations immediately after presenting one of its electric models, or that Volkswagen would abandon its strong diesel production strategy to focus on an electric future?
