With the facelifts of both the estate and the saloon of the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class now already revealed by the brand itself, we were only missing its three-door variants, the Coupé and Cabrio. This small family will make its joint debut at the 2013 Detroit Motor Show.

The two models that complete the 2014 E-Class restyling have also left behind the famous four headlights, now joined by a single unit. Unlike the four- and five-door versions, these have kept the rear pontoon bumpers of the previous model, therefore avoiding major changes, as might initially be expected.

That said, Mercedes-Benz’s designers have not only made changes to the front and rear lights. These feature double-shaped housings where the LEDs are placed, the grille has a single bar instead of two, and now the three-pointed star emblem and the bumper design are more aggressive, with a central air intake and larger external ones.

At the rear, in addition to the sculpted wheel arches, the 2014 models will feature a wing-shaped rear bumper, and lights with a new design that, in addition to being darker, have been chromed to enhance their appearance.

The interior mixes features of the latest-generation C-Class with others from the current E-Class Coupé and Cabrio. The steering wheel has been redesigned with three spokes wrapped in leather and aluminium, giving a much sportier look. New materials have also been included, along with a two-part finish, in wood or aluminium, across the instrument panel, chrome details, an analogue clock between the two central air vents, and a 14.7 cm TFT screen with an audio system and USB and Bluetooth connectivity.

MECHANICS

Under the bonnet, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupé and Cabrio comes as standard with the Stop/Start engine start-stop system.

In Europe, the old continent, the available engines are six petrol engines ranging from 170 CV in the E 200 up to 388 CV in the E 500. We can also choose three diesel engines.

The seven-speed automatic gearbox 7G-TRONIC PLUS features an “M” mode which, after a set period in which the driver does not shift gears manually using the paddles, returns to automatic mode to improve fuel economy. The manual gearbox has six ratios.

EQUIPMENT

As on the rest of the versions, the Coupé and Cabrio offer the AGILITY CONTROL system, which allows the stiffness of both the suspension and the steering to be adjusted depending on how we want to use the car.

In the safety section we find DISTRONIC PLUS, an already familiar device that prevents unintentional lane departure and at the same time tracks traffic in our direction via satellite. The braking assist system Assist Junction, capable of detecting crossing vehicles and/or pedestrians and increasing the braking force applied by the driver, while the PRE-SAFE brake can detect people and automatically apply the brakes to avoid a collision at speeds of up to 50 km/h, and PRE-SAFE PLUS can detect an imminent rear collision and optimise all systems to improve occupant protection.

Finally, we can include four 360º full-view cameras that allow both the driver and the car to see blind spots and their surroundings, thereby improving the safety aids and assisting the driver.
