Mercedes Mercedes-Benz G-Class G 350d: more affordable and more fuel-efficient thanks to the new entry-level version

The G-Class range has gained an entry-level version that uses a 2.9-litre diesel engine, making it the most efficient model and the new entry point to the range

The new Mercedes Mercedes-Benz G-Class arrived in mid-2018 with several engine options, designed to tackle extremely steep terrain. It is not an SUV, but a full-fledged off-roader. The two engines it initially offered were two petrol engines, fitted to the Mercedes G500 and the Mercedes AMG G65. Now, to complete the range, a diesel engine arrives, which brings the entry level of the range in line.

The Mercedes G350d uses an OM 656 diesel engine, with a six-cylinder configuration and a displacement of 2.9 litres. It produces a power output of 282 CV, together with a maximum torque of 600 Nm, available between 1,200 and 3,200 rpm. This engine is paired with a 9-speed automatic gearbox and meets the requirements of the EURO 6d standard, so buyers can rest easy on this point.

As for consumption, the new Mercedes 350d returns 9.8-9.6 l/100 km and has emissions of 259/252 g per kilometre on the NEDC cycle, which places it within the permitted limits. With these figures, it is the Mercedes most efficient G-Class in the brand’s history. For example, the maximum torque of this engine is almost equal to that of the 4.0-litre petrol V8 engine used in the Mercedes G500.

The Mercedes G350d offers an acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.4 seconds and a top speed of 199 km/h. In terms of comfort, this model has also improved, as noise and vibration inside the cabin have been reduced. The gearbox is designed to distribute 40% of the torque to the front axle and 60% to the rear to improve its behaviour and, of course, it has reduction gears to tackle the most demanding terrain.

This version will go on sale in January 2019, but it will not reach dealerships across Europe until April, although the price has not yet been announced.
