Mercedes moves forward with 100% electric vehicles as it builds a battery factory in Untertürkheim

Mercedes lays the foundations for a battery factory in Untertürkheim, where the hearts of the future models of the EQ brand will be developed.

The electric vehicle sector is becoming the centre of attention, since many customers who did not consider them an option have changed their minds. This is also reflected in the brands themselves, which are not only starting to present their first 100% electric bets, but also the measures they will take to develop future models that will rely on the same source of life. In this context is Mercedes-Benz, a brand that has just announced that it has laid the foundations for the construction of a battery factory in Untertürkheim, with the aim of speeding up the production process of its electric vehicles.

Currently, the star brand has a wide range of vehicles that use some type of hybridisation, including mild hybridisation, a system already used by 20 models of Mercedes. However, the brand has already shown its clear intentions to incorporate several electric cars into its range with the EQC, the first model to use this type of powertrain and which will soon be hitting our roads.

With this premise, Mercedes has sought to improve performance and expand battery production with a view to a future in which more electric vehicles join its ranks. To this end, the company has begun construction of the Brühl sub-plant, which forms part of the Untertürkheim complex, where hybrid and fuel cell engines are already produced.

This is how Mercedes is moving towards the creation of a high-technology centre for electric mobility development. At the same time, and according to the German company’s calculations, at the end of the decade it will produce high-efficiency batteries for its EQ-branded models, which will be inserted into the different segments in which Mercedes currently operates.

This high-technology factory will cover 12,000 m² and will be carbon-neutral, which will mean a manufacturing process as committed to the environment as its range of electric vehicles. Furthermore, it will play a very important role in the global battery production network of Mercedes-Benz Cars, which comprises a total of nine factories in seven different locations across three continents.

Little by little, Mercedes will continue to advance in the development of its 100% electric vehicles, which will take the reins from a past filled with combustion engines. We will soon see more additions to the star brand’s EQ family, which aims to continue offering the same exclusivity and luxury but powered by a less polluting heart.
