Mercedes moves toward the electric world with the eVito and eSprinter in their commercial versions

Mercedes takes the leap into electric mobility with its eVito and eSprinter vans, which rely on a battery capable of delivering up to 150 km of range.

Electric vehicles are beginning to make a decisive entry into the market, a trend we see reflected across every segment currently available. This kind of mobility can be found in city cars as well as in supercars, but Mercedes has decided to go one step further with its vans, which are placed directly into electric drive. Both the eVito and the eSprinter are the German brand’s electric bet, offered in its commercial versions with the aim of reducing emissions and saving a considerable amount of money.

Mercedes has wanted to offer its customers the chance to enjoy the generous dimensions of its vans and, at the same time, have performance at the right level without suffering at the refuelling stop. With the eVito and eSprinter, companies can enjoy these advantages and carry out all their tasks with greater efficiency and avoid a high outlay on fuel.

The German brand’s electric vans show hardly any aesthetic changes compared with the combustion models, but it is their mechanical layout that changes completely. Mercedes will use the Hannover IAA 2018 show to unveil the eVito for the first time, a van that will be built entirely in Vitoria, with production starting next spring. Meanwhile, the eSprinter will get an expanded range of motors in its electric variant.

Mercedes has chosen electricity to bring this segment to life, both for the performance it offers and for its zero-emissions operation. The considerable weight of these vans led to powerful diesel engines with high CO2 output, something the star brand has now sought to end with its new range of 100% electric powertrains.

On the one hand, we have the eVito, a model that uses a 41.4 kWh battery offering customers up to 150 kilometres of range, a distance more than sufficient to fulfil its purpose and move with ease through urban environments. This range is complemented by an output of 84 kW and 300 Nm of torque. The eVito also lets users limit speed to 80 km/h in town, achieving greater energy savings.

The eSprinter will arrive at the end of 2019 and will offer two powertrain options within the electric range, allowing it to meet all of its customers’ needs. On the one hand, the most powerful motor, fed by a 55 kWh battery, delivers the same output as the eVito and also offers 150 kilometres of range. If we opt for the more modest version, we find a 41 kWh battery and its range drops to 115 kilometres.

Without a doubt, Mercedes will revolutionise the commercial sector with its electric vans, which offer a far more efficient option for getting around urban areas and even for taking to the road for longer journeys. This is only the beginning, since very soon we will witness how Mercedes introduces this kind of drivetrain across the rest of its models, a task the EQC and EQA will carry out.
