Mitsubishi presents three concepts at the Tokyo Motor Show

At the 43rd Tokyo Motor Show 2013, Mitsubishi will be presenting three concepts that will be world premieres. All three reflect advances in functionality and safety, applied to SUV models, and set out the development guidelines the Japanese group intends to follow in the future. That said, all three are aesthetically hard to digest.

We start with the Mitsubishi GC-PHEV, a large, latest-generation SUV with permanent 4WD. It houses a front-mounted engine and a rear-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid EV (PHEV) system comprising a supercharged 3.0-litre V6 MIVEC, which is coupled to an eight-speed automatic gearbox, plus a high-performance motor with a high-capacity battery. In theory, this combination delivers off-road performance that is out of reach for many SUVs.

The Mitsubishi XR-PHEV is a compact SUV developed to offer a driving experience on another level. It is propelled by a front-mounted engine and a front-wheel-drive PHEV system, configured with a compact 1.1-litre turbocharged direct-injection MIVEC engine, together with a lightweight, high-performance motor connected to a battery.

The third is the Mitsubishi AR, a new idea of a compact MPV that offers the manoeuvrability of an SUV with the roominess of an MPV. Its powertrain is a lightweight hybrid system comprising a turbocharged 1.1-litre direct-injection MIVEC engine.

All three vehicles feature the brand’s active safety technologies, such as the e-Assist and Connected Car technology, which uses state-of-the-art information systems, including a hazard detection system that activates the safety systems, and a self-diagnostic system for malfunctions, which alerts the driver when a repair or vehicle maintenance is required.
