The Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid, presented at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, has been the first plug-in hybrid diesel on the market and will be available in Spain from next year with a wide range of colours and options, according to the Swedish brand.

After the first 1,000 units sold in 2012, and the great acceptance of the model, especially in countries such as the Netherlands, Volvo Car Corporation has increased production to 7,600 units in 2013, with the aim of reaching 10,000 units in 2014. In the case of Spain, orders can already be placed through the dealer network, and the first units will arrive in our country in February 2014 at a starting price of €60,900.

The new Volvo V60 D6 plug-in hybrid combines a 215 hp diesel engine with a 70 CV electric motor, achieving an electric-mode range of 50 km and more than 1,000 km combining both engines, with emissions of 48 g/km.

Pure, Hybrid and Power

In addition to other comfort features, such as the heated steering wheel, the Volvo Plug-in Hybrid has three driving modes: Pure, Hybrid or Power.

In Pure mode the vehicle is powered exclusively by its electric motor, with a range of up to 50 km and zero carbon dioxide emissions. The electric range varies with terrain, climate and driving style.

When we switch to Hybrid mode, we will be in the standard setting every time the vehicle is started. The diesel engine and the electric motor work together to achieve a balance, with CO2 emissions of 48 g/km, corresponding to a diesel consumption of 1.9 l/100 km and offering a range of more than 1,000 km.

In Power mode the vehicle is optimised for the maximum possible output from both engines. The diesel engine and the electric motor have a combined output of 215+70 hp and a maximum torque of 440+200 Nm, which helps the 0 to 100 km/h acceleration reach 6.2 seconds.

Safety remains important for Volvo

In terms of safety, we need only mention one of the latest Euro NCAP tests, in which the model obtained five stars. It incorporates the new Cyclist Detection System; should the driver fail to brake before a collision with a cyclist, the system activates automatically and can help avoid the accident. The City Safety system, which prevents collisions with the vehicle ahead, is now active up to 50 km/h. It will also incorporate IntelliSafe, such as the Blind Spot Information System (BLIS), which is radar-based and alerts the driver when vehicles approach from up to 70 metres behind the car, and the Lane Change Warning System. Another system that will also be offered in Spain is the Cross Traffic Alert, which uses radar sensors at the rear of the car to warn the driver of lateral traffic when reversing out of a parking space.
