More than 30,000 drivers fined in one week for speeding

The Directorate-General for Traffic has launched a campaign to crack down on speeding at the wheel, and we already know the first figures from the campaign. From 8 to 14 April more than 30,000 drivers were reported for speeding.

But the figures don’t stop there, since the new cash-cow gadget DGT helicopter with radar fined 88 people in 24 hours of flying, a real success for the new radar; at this rate it will pay for itself in no time.

However, although the figure of 30,000 drivers is high, in total more than 580,000 drivers were checked -on secondary roads- and just over 21,000 drivers were fined, that is, 3.75% of all the vehicles checked.

On high-occupancy roads, around 370,000 drivers were checked, of whom 11,000 were fined, that is, 3.10% of all those checked. The real star, however, is Pegasus, the new radar that can be mounted on DGT helicopters.

Pegasus followed 522 vehicles and fined 88 of them, that is, a rate of 16% of the vehicles checked. At this rate, Pegasus pays for itself in the blink of an eye.

Another striking figure is the revenue raised in just one week: if we take the initial figure of 30,000 people reported and calculate the minimum speeding fine (50 euros for prompt payment), the final result is 1.5 million euros (minimum) collected in one week (the final figure is surely higher).
