Motorcycles, mopeds and quads: how to pass the MOT (ITV)

Like cars and other vehicles, motorcycles, mopeds and quads must pass the ITV. We tell you how to do it and what you need to prepare.

When we talk about passing the ITV, we always think of cars having to comply with this procedure. But motorcycles, mopeds and quads also have to pass the vehicle technical inspection. And although there are some differences, the requirements are almost the same as those demanded of cars and other vehicles. Let’s review how to pass the ITV for a motorcycle or similar vehicle.

Motorcycles and quads must pass the ITV every four years after the registration date. For mopeds this period is reduced to three years. After the first inspection, it must be passed every two years, in all cases. And the process for booking an ITV appointment is identical to that for cars.

Booking an ITV appointment

To get an appointment at the ITV station, you can obtain a date and time through the website of the corresponding station or by phone. It is important to book an appointment before the current ITV expires. It is best to request an appointment one month in advance, to avoid date problems and to prevent it expiring before you can have the inspection.

To pass the ITV for the motorcycle, quad or moped you need to bring the documentation in order. It is important to have the registration certificate, the technical data sheet and the vehicle insurance receipt. Normally, at the ITV station they can check whether the insurance is in force, so it is usually not necessary. But it is advisable to bring it in case there is any problem and to be able to prove that everything is in order.

Complete motorcycle inspection

The first thing checked is whether the frame number and the registration plate match the vehicle being inspected. Once it is confirmed that it is the same vehicle, the parts reviewed are the tyres, lighting, indicators, brakes and the correct operation of the levers. Of course, the mechanical and engine components, emissions and noise are also checked. Everything must be within the margins set by the regulations. Once everything has been checked, the condition of the vehicle is assessed and the ITV is either passed or the relevant repairs or replacements are required.

In the case of mopeds, it is also checked that they do not exceed 45 km/h or go over the maximum permitted noise level. Many users remove the speed limiter or even change the exhaust. This can prevent the moped from passing the ITV successfully, so these modifications should be avoided if you want to keep enjoying its use.

ITV price for motorcycles

The price of the ITV for motorcycles, quads and mopeds varies greatly from one autonomous community to another. That said, it is always cheaper than that for a car. The difference in costs is similar to that experienced with cars. For example, in Madrid it is quite expensive, with an average of around 30 euros, while in other communities it can drop to 17 euros or even less. You should visit the ITV website of your autonomous community to find out the cost of the inspection.
