Mud rain: this is how you should wash your car

With mud rain, care must be taken when washing the car, because the mud itself can scratch the bodywork paint.

When it rains, the car usually ends up quite dirty. It’s not just water that falls, since the rain also carries dust and other particles floating in the air, and if they land on the car, they stay there. If we are in a moment when there is a lot of dust and sand in the air, as often happens when the wind blows in from the Sahara, the rainfall is invariably muddy.

When the car gets covered in mud, you have to resign yourself to it. When it stops raining, a layer of mud will remain on it and it will need washing to remove it. The first piece of advice we will give you is not to do it until the rain has passed, because if you do it before the storm is over, the car will be covered in mud again and it won’t be worth it.

How to clean mud off the car

It is better not to put it through the car wash tunnel, to avoid it being left in a bad state and the mud dirtying it further instead of leaving it clean, and on top of that damaging the bodywork. We are going to give you some tips for leaving the car properly clean if it has been raining mud and you need it to come out gleaming.

Mud sticks to the bodywork, so it can be difficult and complicated to remove without causing damage to it. That is why the first step is to thoroughly wet the entire surface of the car, especially the areas where the most mud has built up. The best option is to use soapy water or spray wax. In this way the mud is prevented from rubbing against the paint and damaging it.

The recommended order for cleaning is to start with the wheels. Then you should move on to the bodywork, with plenty of water to dilute the mud well and avoid friction that would leave marks on the paint. The bodywork should be followed by the door jambs and finally the windows.

It is advisable to clean it with a large sponge, one that holds a lot of water and can thoroughly wet the mud. You should not press too hard, and rinse it many times. If you use a bucket, you must change the water frequently to always have clean water where the mud does not build up. This prevents the mud removed from being picked up by the sponge when it is wetted and then rubbing against the paint.

To clean the wheels properly, there are round brushes that fit the shape of the wheels and that allow all the dirt to be removed efficiently. As for the bodywork surface, once the dirtiest mud has been removed, it is better to use a microfibre cloth, which picks up dirt more effectively.

When the cleaning is finished, it is advisable to protect the bodywork with a wax spray. This will remove the extra moisture, which can be wiped away with paper or a soft towel. You can let the sun and wind dry the car, but keep in mind that any remaining moisture will trap airborne dust and dirty the car a little, so it is better to remove all that moisture as efficiently as possible.

With these tips you will have the car free of mud and without the risk of its particles scratching the paint in the car wash tunnel.
