Mustang Bullitt, the surprise Ford is preparing for the Detroit Auto Show

It looks like there will finally be a muscle car unveiling in Detroit. Ford is preparing to surprise everyone by presenting the Bullitt special edition of its new Mustang GT.

According to Automotive News, Ford could be preparing to surprise visitors at the Detroit Auto Show, opening its doors next week, with a special, higher-performance edition of the Ford Mustang GT that will go on sale later this year, 2018, under the name “Bullitt”.

The special version is part of the brand’s tribute to the 50th anniversary of the legendary film “Bullitt” (1968), directed by Peter Yates and starring the already iconic Steve McQueen, in which the appearance of the Ford Mustang turned the model into a true icon of the automotive world.

“We have no Mustang news to share today, but we love the interest in America’s favourite muscle car,” said Ford spokesman Mike Levine last Wednesday. The car was not among the models Ford showed for the first time to various media in early January ahead of its official presentation, but everything points to the official version being the surprise the brand has in store for the Detroit Auto Show.

And just like the already legendary Highland Green Mustang GT 390 Fastback used by Steve McQueen in the memorable chase through the streets of Detroit — the best ever filmed — the one Ford will unveil in Detroit will also be, as it could not be otherwise, finished in the iconic dark green colour and will feature the classic five-spoke black wheels with a chrome lip that the car in the film wore, along with many other unique cosmetic details.

For the time being no details have emerged about the model’s performance or the number of units that will be produced of this new limited edition of the Mustang Bullitt, of which Ford already sold versions under this same name with great success in 2001, 2008 and 2009.

The rumour of this new edition’s launch has intensified after some photos surfaced recently, in which photographers spotted what appeared to be a dark green 2018 Mustang while a television commercial was being filmed on the streets of Chicago at the end of 2017. In addition, a Mustang forum announced that an auction house listed among its items “a new and special Ford Mustang” to be sold on January 19, with the proceeds going to a California school that boasts having had a notable student among its pupils: Steve McQueen.
