New Fiat Tipo, a global saloon that revives a historic name

Fiat Tipo 1

Fiat has been working for some time on a new family of economical, global models designed to meet the demands of a large number of buyers.

That is why, in recent times, it has presented proposals such as the AEgea saloon, which has now evolved into the Tipo for several markets.

In this way, the Italian firm revives the name “Tipo”, which was already used in the 1990s for its compact model of the time. Back then, the Tipo was a 3- and 5-door compact designed to compete in the European market with rivals such as the Volkswagen Golf. With a groundbreaking design and generous interior space, it enjoyed good acceptance, although its mediocre build quality means that very few units can be seen on the road today.

The new Fiat Tipo takes a completely different approach from its spiritual predecessor. We are talking about a compact saloon with a global focus, built on a modular platform shared with many models in the FCA group. It was initially presented under the name AEgea, but the Italians seem to have decided to “rename” it to make it even more appealing.
In this way, the name “Tipo” will be used across Europe, as well as in Africa. Only in Turkey will it have a different name, where it will be called “Egea”.

The Tipo will offer generous amounts of space and practicality, combined with sufficient equipment and a good range of engines. There will be at least two diesel units from the Multijet II family, to which two more petrol engines will be added (possibly one naturally aspirated and the other turbocharged), with power outputs not exceeding 120 CV. Manual and automatic transmissions will also be available, always with six speeds.

The new Tipo begins production in Italy in the coming weeks, and it is expected to be ready for sale before the end of the year, so by mid-December we will start to see the first units on the streets.
