Lighting systems have taken a big step forward in terms of development and, above all, in the pursuit of continuous improvements applicable to both front headlights and rear lights. Xenon, LED or laser lights are incorporated into packages, usually available as options, that almost all car ranges have in their equipment.

In this case, it is Škoda with the Superb that includes among its optional elements the bi-xenon headlights with AFS function and LED daytime running lights. The AFS (Adaptive Frontlight System) function optimally adapts the road lighting to the various driving situations that may arise. The system has three operating modes: city, conventional road and motorway.

  • Conventional road mode: it is activated between 0 and 15 km/h, and between 50 and
90 km/h, and the headlights are in their initial position.
  • City mode: it is activated when driving between 15 and 50 km/h.
  • Motorway mode: this mode requires long-range and greater lane illumination. The left headlight tilts upwards and moves slightly to the left from its initial position, while the right headlight rises.

The AFS system also has another feature, which is cornering lights, which are activated between 0 and 40 km/h. It additionally incorporates fog lights integrated into the cornering light function. When driving at night, the benefits these functions provide are noticeable.

The so-called masked continuous beam or Smart Light Assist detects approaching traffic and vehicles ahead through the multifunction camera. The light at that moment becomes dimmer while maintaining the intensity of illumination and range in the other areas of the road. In this way, it does not automatically switch off the high beam to change to dipped beam, so as not to dazzle other drivers; it simply adapts to the different traffic situations.

The Smart Light Assist offers optimal lighting in all traffic situations, and thereby provides greater safety. The new lighting options do not stop there: the door handles, seats and footwells are also illuminated thanks to the LED ambient lighting when the doors are opened. This light effect changes when the engine starts; the light intensity changes automatically, where the lighting elements create a subtle atmosphere while driving. You can choose between three different colours, adjustable via the infotainment system.

Another curious element in the lighting section is the LED torch located in the boot. It can be removed and used outside the vehicle as well. This torch charges automatically in its holder when the engine is running.
