New Mercedes-Benz SL limited edition Mille Miglia 417

Mercedes-Benz is once again going to use three numbers that have marked a milestone in its history to create a limited edition. Following the SLR 722, which paid tribute to the model of the same name with that number printed on its bodywork, and with which Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson won the Mille Miglia in 1955, this time the German brand repeats both the event and the date to launch the new limited series Mille Miglia 417 of its SL roadster.
Those figures were displayed on the race number of the 300 SL aboard which American driver John Cooper Fitch won the production sports car category of the Mille Miglia in 1955, a race that started at 4:17 in the morning. The new edition commemorates that triumph and is offered as a styling package for the SL 400 and SL 500. It will be unveiled to the public at the next Geneva Motor Show.

This set of add-ons, which will be applied to only 500 units, consists of red details for the lower lip of the front bumper, the rear diffuser, the wheels and the brake calipers, badges for the edition next to the side air intakes, and embroidery on the headrests, plus an interior trim that combines red with carbon fibre inserts with a matt finish.
The Mille Miglia 417 package is offered by default in the exterior colour Magnetite Black metallic, but the customer may also opt for three other matt paints from the Designo catalogue (two white and one black). Compared with the base price of the SL (for the moment, only data for the German market is available), this edition represents a surcharge of 14,800 euros on the SL 400 and 12,800 on the SL 500.

The SL’s link with the German brand’s participation in the Mille Miglia thus continues to bear fruit in the form of limited series, dating back to the SL 500 Mille Miglia, of which ten units were built in 1994. It was followed by five other versions within the R129 generation, while the R230 was entitled to just one in 2003, based on the SL 350 and limited to twelve examples.
