NIO changes its strategy in Europe and opts for a more centralised approach

The electric vehicle manufacturer NIO has confirmed its intention to carry out a major reorganisation of its activities in Europe. The Chinese company will move away from fragmented country-by-country management and adopt a more centralised and coordinated structure at continental level, organised by business functions rather than national divisions.

This change seeks to improve collaboration between teams, raise operational efficiency and ensure more consistent execution across all European markets. Internal sources at the company say these changes respond to the brand’s overall strategy in the region, which aims to strengthen quality standards, optimise the user experience and speed up processes.

The first consequence of this restructuring is the departure of David Sultzer, who had served as general manager for Germany since mid-2024 and who, during that time, had succeeded in stabilising operations after several leadership changes. NIO has publicly thanked him for his work in the German market and wished him every success in his future projects.

Changes to the sales model in Europe

Although the company has not detailed all the specifics of this restructuring, several specialist sources indicate that the sales model could evolve in some countries. Until now, NIO has operated in Europe through direct sales, directly controlling its showrooms, delivery and after-sales service centres. This approach allows a much closer relationship with the customer, but the costs that must be met are much higher.

According to some recent reports, Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden could move to a dealer or concessionaire model, which is lighter on assets for the brand. Norway, by contrast, would probably keep the direct sales system. NIO has neither officially confirmed nor denied these sales changes, limiting itself to stating that operations continue to run normally and that Europe remains a strategic region for the company, where it maintains its unwavering commitment to customers, partners and employees.

This reorientation is in line with previous moves by NIO, such as alliances with local distributors to enter new European markets during 2025 and 2026, including Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Poland and others. The goal seems clear: to reduce capital intensity in mature markets where direct sales have not reached the expected volume.
