NIO will begin commercial sales of the Firefly urban electric car in Europe next week
With the Firefly, the Chinese manufacturer seeks to attract those European customers who look for a balance between design and technology in a compact and Premium format.
The Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer NIO will begin deliveries of the first electric car of its new Firefly brand, under this same name, next week. The first deliveries will take place in Norway and the Netherlands, with plans to expand to other European markets in the short term.
This launch, officially scheduled for August 14, has generated great expectation since NIO announced in April that the Firefly’s debut in Europe would start precisely in these two countries.

The Firefly, referring in this case to the model and not the brand, sits in the market within the compact Premium segment, competing with equivalent vehicles from brands such as MINI or Smart. In Norway, thanks to tax exemptions for electric vehicles, the model will have a truly competitive price that starts at around 23,500 euros at current exchange rates. In the Netherlands, on the other hand, its cost will be significantly higher, requiring almost 30 thousand euros, including VAT, to acquire a unit.
In China, meanwhile, the Firefly has an initial price of 119,800 yuan, which amounts to roughly 14,400 euros. That is, practically half of what it will cost in the Netherlands and other European markets such as Germany, where its price will be similar.
Technical specifications to consider
The Firefly comes equipped with a 41.2 kWh LFP battery pack, which allows it to offer a range of about 330 kilometres under the WLTP homologation cycle used in Europe. This range can, however, increase to around 470 km when used exclusively in urban settings.

When recharging, the Firefly supports a maximum power of up to 100 kW in direct current, thus making it possible to increase the state of charge from 10 to 80 percent in just 29 minutes, according to the manufacturer. A feature that makes it an attractive option for those seeking a compact, efficient electric vehicle with a Premium approach.
NIO presented the Firefly brand and its first model in December 2024, during the NIO Day event, and in April 2025 it revealed new details, including the price list. It is important to note that the Chinese company does not seek to position Firefly as a budget alternative, as one might think, but rather as a value proposition in the high-end compact segment.

Following the launch in Norway and the Netherlands, NIO plans to bring the Firefly to other European countries, such as Belgium, Luxembourg, Austria, Poland, Romania, the Czech Republic and Hungary. According to some recent reports, Austria and Hungary could see the launch of this model before the end of 2025, while in the other countries it is not expected until 2026. Until now, NIO has operated in Europe in the Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, Germany and Sweden, so it is likely that Firefly will also soon arrive in these last three markets.
