Nissan X-Trail 2022: new details on the fourth generation of the Japanese SUV

The Japanese brand has given us more information about what will be the fourth generation following the presentation in China of its large SUVs, the Nissan X-Trail

Nissan has confirmed that the upcoming Nissan X-Trail, the 7-seat SUV, will arrive in Europe during the summer of 2022. We have already seen the 5-seat version for the Chinese market, which, logically, should resemble the one we will soon see.

For years the Nissan X-Trail has been one of the big heavyweights of the SUV segment, even becoming the best-selling SUV in the world in 2017, a crown that was taken by the Toyota RAV4 the following year.

It will share its platform with its smaller sibling, the Qashqai

As we have already seen in the images of the X-Trail presented in China, it will share many elements, both technical and in its interior, since the platform on which the new model will be based will be the CMF-C of Renault-Nissan.

As for its design, the fourth-generation Nissan X-Trail, following its sibling presented in China a few days ago, will feature a double grille in a V shape in silver and black.

On its sides, the black A-pillars stand out, making the roof appear floating and giving it a more modern look than its predecessor. Thanks to its slightly shorter wheelbase and its new bumpers that reduce its length, it gains a certain more compact look.

Its C-pillar has also been redesigned, creating an attractive shape since, from its profile, the rear glass can be seen wrapping around the rear side of the car where it meets that pillar.

As is typical for an SUV, the entire lower part of the vehicle is fitted with black plastic cladding, giving it more visual height and greater practicality when driving on tracks where stones may strike those parts, which are more resistant than if they were painted.

The rear lower section has a kind of silver-coloured diffuser and a plastic moulding completing the bumper area. The new lights and the shape of its spoiler also give great prominence to the style ribs running across the tailgate.

Different types of powertrains

The new engine with e-Power technology that will be fitted to the new Qashqai is also expected to be fitted to this X-Trail. This system is based on a fully electric motor delivering 190 CV, supported by a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine that drives an electricity generator. In short, an electric vehicle with extended range.

The new X-Trail will also be offered with two petrol versions of 140 and 158 CV respectively, with a 12V mild-hybrid system.

The seven-seat SUV from Nissan may be equipped with 4×4 traction and either a six-speed manual gearbox or a continuously variable automatic.

Inside, the large infotainment screen stands out, along with the new digital instrument cluster with new animations, the new head-up display and, finally, the independent climate control selector separate from the infotainment system.
