Not every car can have the honour of setting a record on the German circuit, but when one does, it naturally wants to be recognised for its prestige, and in this case also to demonstrate the efficiency of its new technology.

The X-Trail FCV is the first vehicle powered by a fuel cell to complete a lap in 11 minutes 58 seconds on conventional tyres at the Nürburgring.

The prototype, costing €1.3 million, has an electric heart that does not pollute the environment at all, because it uses a fuel cell in which an electrochemical reaction takes place between hydrogen stored in a tank at a pressure of 700 bar and oxygen, the result being water vapour.

The car can reach a top speed of 150 km/h thanks to the 120 horsepower provided by its engine, and it can also offer a driving range of 500 kilometres.

The X-Trail FCV is part of the Nissan Green Program 2010, through which the Japanese company commits to reducing CO2 emissions from its products and increasing recycling in the medium term, which is why hybrid cars will be introduced in the coming years.
