Opel Astra Car of the Year in the Canary Islands 2010

The Opel Astra continues to pile up awards, and the latest one it has received is “Car of the Year 2010” in the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands. This accolade joins the others it has accumulated, notably the “ABC Car of the Year 2010“, the “Readers’ Car of the Year 2010” from the Grupo Editorial Prensa Ibérica, and the “Golden Steering Wheel” awarded by the magazine AutoBild.

The Opel Astra won by an almost absolute majority, with 41.6% of the votes cast by the 13 members of the jury, made up of motoring specialists from the Canary Islands who represent their respective media outlets. On Canarian roads it has been very well received, with significant sales figures.

The award, organised by the Sports Press Association of Las Palmas and Tenerife, is now in its fifth year. It recognises the car that offers the best conditions for Canarian drivers, assessing aspects such as safety, both active and passive, finishes, styling, equipment, technology, ecology, innovation, maintenance costs, value for money and after-sales service from the dealer or brand importer for the archipelago.

That is no small achievement for a flagship vehicle within a brand. The Opel Astra is one of the best-selling models of the German manufacturer, and awards like this always help not only to publicise the model, but also to give potential buyers confidence in this jury when they are weighing up several cars. Good news for Opel indeed.
