Production of the Volvo XC40 begins in Belgium
Volvo has just announced that production has begun of the brand’s smallest SUV, the XC40. This crossover is built on a new CMA platform.

The compact SUV segment is gaining considerable momentum and carving out its place among the other segments. This is thanks to the versatility they offer and the highly competitive prices they come with. But some brands want to take it even further, setting themselves apart from more generalist vehicles. This is the case with Volvo and its new XC40, which has started production in Belgium.
The Swedish firm has wholeheartedly entered this new segment and aims to win over other sectors of the market with the XC40. Even so, they have wanted to go further and have positioned the brand’s smallest SUV in the premium category. It achieves this thanks to elements inherited from its bigger siblings, the XC60 and XC90, but presented in a more accessible way. This combination of luxury and versatility has proved so popular that more than 10,000 orders for the new XC40 have already been placed.
These units were ordered before production of Volvo’s compact SUV began, but the first XC40s will be delivered to their lucky owners early next year. But this success is not only down to its attractive and fresh styling, but also to the technology featured in the new, more affordable Volvo.

The XC40 adopts a new setup thanks to everything it has inherited from its bigger siblings and thanks to the new modular platform debuted by the compact SUV. This platform, called CMA, was designed exclusively by Volvo and will be used to develop all future products in the 40 series. This leads us to conclude that the brand is planning to expand its range.
But to bring this new technology to life, it was necessary to carry out a series of modifications in Ghent, where the factory is located. The Swedish firm expanded by 8,000 square metres dedicated to developing the new platform. More than 300 robots were also installed in order to build the new XC40 as well as possible.

Volvo has also confirmed that a new factory will open in the United States very soon, specifically in South Carolina. In this way, American customers will have better access to the brand’s products and, above all, to its SUVs, as they are a very popular segment there.
Volvo has made no statements about how many units it expects to produce, but we do know its price for Spain, which starts at 42,220 euros, aiming to compete directly with the Audi Q5 and Volkswagen Tiguan despite belonging to a higher segment.
