Renoca launches a new trend: turning 1990 cars into 1980 versions

Personalization is winning over fans all over the world, and this Japanese company proposes converting 1990 models into others similar to those sold in 1980.

There are many trends in vehicle personalization. Fashions that take hold and make current models turn into things quite different from what we expect. Often it is a matter of “bringing” old models into the 21st century or giving a vintage touch to the more current ones. But at Renoca they go a step further. This Japanese customization workshop wants to turn 1990s models into 1980s vehicles.

This option is available for the Land Cruiser J80 (1990), Land Cruiser J90 Prado (1996) and Land Cruiser J100 (1999). After passing through the hands of the workshop professionals, they become a Land Cruiser J60, which was sold in the 1980s.

All transformed models can be ordered with round or square headlights, and the grille can be black or chrome-finished. In the latter case, both grilles carry the Toyota logo. All these elements come from the original Land Cruiser J60 design, but have been manufactured by Renoca.

The company takes care of manufacturing the steel bonnet, along with the headlight housings, front wings and bumpers made to measure so they fit perfectly on the converted models. In addition, those who choose this kit for their 90s Land Cruiser can find a wide range of alloy wheels and a considerable number of retro colours to enhance the model’s nostalgic touch.

However, the retro look they aim for is not entirely authentic. Inside, considerably more comfort is gained than the 1980s Land Cruiser J60 had. Furthermore, several multimedia screens have been included to accommodate current navigation systems.

The upholstery can also have a more modern and attractive appearance, together with cabin elements that create a distinctive and more pleasant style. The three-spoke wood-covered steering wheel is also an optional element that can give the vehicle personality.

As for the mechanics, all models keep their original engines. However, there is a lift kit that allows the suspension to raise the ground clearance and improve the model’s off-road capabilities. The price of the customization kit starts at the equivalent of 20,000 euros, although this figure can increase depending on the optional equipment.

In addition to these Land Cruiser models, Renoca also offers a look similar to the Land Cruiser J60 for the Toyota Hiace, the Toyota Town Ace and a square Toyota Euro Box designed to resemble a VW Golf MK1. Will this be a trend that spreads to other brands, making vehicles over 20 years old look like even older ones?
