Fisker Karma Hybrid Cars Curiosities
Sandy Causes the Fire of 16 Fisker Karmas at Port Newark
Fisker continues a bad run that has been going on all year. Now there is a fire incident involving 16 of its vehicles at Port Newark, caused by the flooding left behind by Storm Sandy.

Everywhere we have been shown images and videos of Hurricane Sandy passing through New York and surrounding areas (which, by the way, received no coverage as it passed through Cuba and the Antilles), as if it were the only storm in the world. However, Fisker is one of those lamenting, since 16 of its Karmas caught fire for still unknown reasons while they were parked at Port Newark.
Apparently the parking area was flooded, causing the fire in some of the cars that were waiting to be shipped. There are reports that the 16 vehicles were almost completely destroyed, and some witnesses say they saw explosions upon contact with seawater.
Fisker is trying to find an explanation for the incident, since not all Fiskers were damaged by the fire, and has issued a press release explaining that for the moment they cannot access the port to begin assessing the damage to the vehicles, nor determine the causes of the fires, due to the destruction left behind by the storm.
Before we start demonizing electric cars and other extended-range vehicles, it should be said that this failure was evidently due to isolated cases of insufficient insulation of the electrical components in some models, since not all the Karmas caught fire, as can be seen in the other images that Jalopnik uploaded a few hours ago.
It has not been a very happy year for Fisker, and these fires have been the icing on the cake. We will see what the investigations reveal about the charred remains of its vehicles.
