Selenium, a software that will turn your vehicle into an autonomous car

Where am I? What is around me? What do I do next? Three questions that an autonomous vehicle must be able to answer before driving on its own

The three basic questions an autonomous car must answer are: where am I? what is around me? and what do I do next? And Oxbotica’s Selenium already answers all three, thanks to the cameras and lasers that allow it to position itself and locate itself on maps with full precision regardless of weather or lighting conditions, and without needing the GPS it also incorporates.

Selenium is the name of the autonomous control system developed by the British company Oxbotica, according to which its system can operate on any type of vehicle or object used for cargo, from forklifts to cargo containers, to vehicles. The software combines information about its geolocation with local information about the environment around the vehicle to determine a safe path and speed for moving the vehicle toward its destination.

To know what is around it, Selenium uses sensors and algorithms that allow it to identify and track pedestrians, cars and other possible obstacles around it. And to decide the task it must carry out next, once it knows where it is and what surrounds it, the system itself calculates a safe and efficient route to transport it to its destination.

As an example of practicality, Oxbotica will provide the Selenium autonomous control system to the GATEway project in Greenwich, London. A software that can handle up to 8 passenger transport vehicles, which will be used by residents and the public during the two-month trial and demonstration period that will begin in the second half of 2017.

Oxbotica, in addition, is developing, together with the software for autonomous vehicles for last-mile distribution, a fully autonomous vehicle with the system already integrated that is very reminiscent of the Twizy from Renault, though with greater width and capacity for two seats. Both vehicles will be presented soon in Greenwich.
