Shelby Super Snake 2018: the audacity of 800 hp and plenty of fun behind the wheel

Shelby American has once again chosen the Ford Mustang to apply the Super Snake name to. Thanks to this, the muscle car is capable of delivering up to 800 CV

The Ford Mustang has been shaping the history of muscle cars since its debut in the 1960s and, over time, many names have been added to the American sports car. If we hear the word “Shelby”, any die-hard petrolhead’s skin is sure to tingle, and we cannot help but think of everything that name carries when it lands on the Mustang. Now the quintessential pony car has once again passed through Shelby’s hands to give birth to the Super Snake, a beast of performance capable of leaving anyone breathless.

While the Shelby GT500 has yet to take its place in the spotlight, the American tuner has decided to offer a very special package for the Ford Mustang, aimed at satisfying those who crave the most radical version of the muscle car. However, Shelby has known how to make the most of the platform offered by the Ford sports car, since the Super Snake name accentuates even the smallest detail of the Mustang.

Aesthetically, we find the Mustang’s characteristic sportiness, where its imposing width and charismatic fastback design draw attention everywhere. However, Shelby wanted to enhance the pony car’s features even further, and to do so they have resorted to various modifications. On one hand, there is a new, much more aggressive front splitter that enhances the Mustang’s attributes and, at the same time, there is a double air intake on the hood to cool its all-powerful V8.

Continuing our analysis of the Shelby Super Snake, we notice that the sides receive new widened arches to house the 20-inch wheels that sit so gracefully beneath this very special Mustang. At the same time, the rear is reinterpreted with the presence of a “duck tail” spoiler, which will improve aerodynamics, as well as its new rear diffuser, which fits directly within Shelby’s design language.

The American tuner also took the opportunity to unleash its imagination and take the Mustang GT’s mechanics to another level. Shelby started directly from the powerful 5.0-liter V8 engine and 450 with the aim of raising its output to 710 CV in the first instance, but they did not stop there. After installing a supercharging system and making several modifications to the ECU, Shelby American managed to offer a second package capable of delivering up to 800 CV, a figure with which it can claim a 0 to 100 km/h sprint in just 3.5 seconds.

However, the Shelby Super Snake is not all raw power, and to safely transmit its new herd of horses, changes to the suspension and brakes have been necessary, where new calipers, six-piston at the front axle and four-piston at the rear, signed by Brembo, will take care of stopping the fiercest Mustang to date. However, achieving this higher performance comes at a price.

Anyone who cannot wait for Ford to unveil the new Shelby GT500 and wants to own this flawless Super Snake will have to pay a total of $113,445, roughly 96,300 euros at current exchange rates. In this way, Shelby American keeps its legacy intact with the Super Snake, where everything it implies can be seen perfectly reflected in this new generation of the Mustang.
