Skoda electrifies the Tour de France vehicle fleet

The limitation of emissions from the convoy of vehicles that accompanies the cyclists in each stage will allow the riders to breathe purer air, especially on the mountain stages

A new edition of the most famous cycling race in the world begins today, June 29, starting this time from Florence, Italy. This year, however, for the first time this sporting event will not finish in Paris as is customary, due to the coincidence with the Olympic Games, which will begin in the French capital a few days later.

The route will take the 176 cyclists and the 205 support cars through 21 stages and nearly 3,500 kilometres until arriving in Nice on July 21. The 21 stages include eight flat stretches, four hilly stages, seven mountain stages and two time trials, passing through the Italian Apennines, the Italian and French Alps, the Massif Central and the Pyrenees.

As the main sponsor of the Tour de France, Skoda will once again be in charge of providing the organisation with those 205 support cars. The major difference from previous years is that in this edition most of them will be battery electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles.

The electrification of the automotive sector also reaches the Tour de France

The race director, Christian Prudhomme, will lead the peloton in his iconic Red Car, equipped with special features such as a panoramic solar roof and state-of-the-art communication technology. This year, the fully electric Enyaq and the brand’s flagship, the Skoda Superb, will serve as its mobile command centre.

Since 2004, Skoda has supported the world’s largest cycling event year after year as its main partner and official vehicle supplier. In addition, for the fourteenth time, the Skoda design team has been responsible for creating the crystal trophies for the overall winner and the leaders of the points, mountain and young rider classifications of the Tour de France. For ten years, the Czech carmaker has also sponsored the green jersey for the leader of the points classification.
