Stellantis sounds the red alert: 2024 has been a bad year for the company

Stellantis’s situation has become a serious cause for concern, as 2024 has brought a considerable and catastrophic drop in sales

Although an image of normality is being projected, suggesting that the automotive industry is recovering after the harsh blow of the pandemic, the data tell a different story. And one of the brands suffering the most from falling sales across its marques is Stellantis. The group that hosts many international brands has recorded a considerable sales decline, according to data published in the United States.

Although we do not know the European figures, in the North American country it has experienced a sales drop of 15%. In the United States, sales of 1,303,570 units were recorded across all its brands. Are that many vehicles sold? Not a few, but they are spread across several brands, and it must be taken into account that in 2023 those sales came to 1,527,090, which means more than 200,000 fewer units sold.

A decline in every brand except one

These figures leave it behind historic American brands, such as Ford and GM. The former recorded sales of 1,974,009 vehicles, 4.2% above 2023, while the latter registered 2.7 million vehicles sold, 4% more than in 2023.

One of Stellantis’s main brands, especially in the United States, is Jeep. This brand recorded a 9% sales decline, with 587,725 units. The drag has come from the Jeep Grand Cherokee, whose sales fell by 12%. The Jeep Gladiator recorded even lower sales, with a 24% decrease, and the Renegade saw its sales fall by 68%. Another worrying figure is the decline of the brand’s flagship SUV, the Wagoneer, which sold 48% fewer units than in 2023. The only model that resisted the downturn was the Jeep Compass, which posted a 16% sales increase.

Neither RAM nor Dodge, two historic names in the American market, managed even to maintain their sales. Both suffered declines that worry Stellantis, and for which it is seeking solutions. Chrysler, which was one of the most powerful in the United States, could be on the verge of disappearing if Stellantis does not find a way to reverse its decline. So everything looks bad for the conglomerate.

But amid so much bad news, one brand stands out and has managed to recover its sales compared with 2023, even closing the year on a positive note. That brand is FIAT, which saw a 153% increase. Admittedly, sales were only 1,528 units, which makes this win somewhat anecdotal.

One of the models that rose the most has been the FIAT 500. This model increased its sales compared with 2023 by 7,983%. That is, instead of the 12 sold in 2023, last year it went to 970 units. Positive figures, but they are diluted within the large losses of the other brands. At least, in the United States, one of the largest markets in the world.
