Surprise! Ford is removing the EcoBoost engine from the Ford Mustang in Europe

Ford has decided to end sales of the Ford Mustang EcoBoost in Europe. The reason? V8 sales are much higher.

Nobody expected this move from Ford, a brand that is increasingly committed to caring for the environment, as its models such as the Ford Mustang Mach-E and its hybrid range demonstrate. However, the company behind the oval has made a decision that has come as a surprise: to drop the 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine from the Mustang range in Europe. The fact is that Ford brought the muscle car to Europe with the aim of offering two versions to reduce emissions and provide an option that better suited the tastes and needs of customers on this side of the pond.

We witnessed a few years ago how the Chevrolet Camaro failed in its attempt to conquer the old continent. Ford, which took note of its mistakes, decided to weigh the idea more carefully and carry it out with greater caution, finally launching it in 2015. The result? The Ford Mustang has been awarded several times as the best-selling sports car in the world.

But from now on, anyone who wants a Ford Mustang will inevitably have to get the 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8. This engine, which is irrevocably in danger of extinction, is characterised by producing 450 CV and 529 Nm of torque, figures that guarantee a 0 to 100 km/h time of 4.6 seconds and a top speed of 249 km/h.

In this way, the company behind the oval eliminates what at first seemed the logical option in many European countries. This was a 2.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder capable of delivering 290 CV and 440 Nm of torque. In addition, the EcoBoost allowed 0 to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds and a top speed of 233 km/h.

However, European customers have spoken and made their preferences very clear: they want the V8. The fact is that sales of the EcoBoost version have dropped drastically compared with the V8, the United Kingdom being a clear example, where only 15% of the muscle car’s sales correspond to the entry-level variant.

In this way, Ford puts an end to what was initially going to be the logical variant in this part of the world. But far from it, since the not-so-outrageous consumption figures of the Mustang GT, its good value for money and its history have led Europeans to opt for the V8.
