Tesla Model S Plaid: the armoured electric car unveiled by Armormax

The company specialising in car armouring has worked on a Tesla Model S Plaid and fitted it with armour that is not noticeable from the outside.

There are companies that build armoured vehicles to protect their occupants from external attacks. Tuners focus on vehicles that can maintain their performance despite the extra weight that armour adds. So far, it is rare for anyone to have turned to electric cars for armouring and body reinforcement work. But Armormax has dared to armour a Tesla Model S Plaid.

The performance of any armoured car drops considerably once armouring is fitted, because reinforced panels tend to be quite heavy. This does not sit well with an electric car. However, the specialist company took advantage of the fact that the Tesla Model S Plaid delivers power equivalent to 1,000 CV, which allows it to keep a level of functionality that makes it efficient.

Anti-bullet reinforcement

The car has been reinforced with bulletproof panels and impact-resistant windows. In total, the armour used on this model adds 136 kg. That is roughly the weight of two average-sized people, so it does not demand much effort from the electric motor.

Visually, there is no difference in the exterior of the car between this armoured variant and the standard version. The car has been styled to be discreet and not stand out. The differences do become apparent when the doors are opened. These are heavier, although they still open with ease. The glass is also thicker, and for security reasons the windows cannot be lowered.

The weight of this armoured model rises from 2,189 kg to 2,315 kg with this armour configuration. The customisation company assures that other options are available, which offer greater protection and add more weight. All of this depends on the buyer’s taste and specific needs.

The price of the conversion ranges from 60,000 to 200,000 euros, so armouring one of these cars can end up costing as much as buying a new car.
