Tesla will renew its Premium models -Model S and Model X- this same year

If you’re thinking about buying a Model S or a Model X, it might be a good idea to hold on to your money for a few more months while waiting for a renewal of both models.

Tesla plans to update its Model S and Model X models this same year, or at least that is what Lars Moravy, Vice President of Vehicle Engineering at the American company, has suggested during an interview on the Ride the Lightning podcast. Although Moravy has not given specific details, he has suggested that both models will incorporate some improvements the company has already implemented in the new Model 3 and Model Y.

Likewise, he also took the opportunity to dispel some rumors that have circulated recently suggesting that Tesla could discontinue both models to focus on the Model 3 and Model Y, along with other projects such as the Cybercab or the Cybertruck. “They are not going to disappear anytime soon,” he responded categorically. Something that becomes quite clear if Tesla also plans to renew both models this same year.

Tesla updated the Model S and Model X in early 2021, also introducing the high-performance version Plaid. Four years have passed since that update, so it is not surprising that sales of both models have been slowing down over this time. That is why Moravy believes both Premium models “already need some attention“, and this is precisely what will happen, in his own words, before the end of the year.

What can we expect?

It is not clear, however, how deep this renewal will be. Whether we will see profound changes both inside and especially on the exterior of the vehicle, as has happened with the renewed Model 3 and Model Y, or whether the improvements will be minor. In the latter case we would be talking, perhaps, about the addition of ambient lighting inside or a new front camera, features the Model Y already has.

As we have already mentioned, sales of the Model S and Model X have lost momentum in recent years, although no specific data is available on this, since the figures Tesla provides are combined and also include units sold of the Cybertruck under the category “Other models“. The company claims that 94,105 units were produced in 2024, but we do not know how many correspond to the Model S/X and how many to the Cybertruck out of all of them. What is evident, however, is that a renewal of both models is the boost their sales need right now.
