We all agree that autonomous driving systems are part of a future that is not immediate but is medium to long term, and which will allow us to enjoy a pleasant drive in our own cars, but may perhaps cause us to lose the essence of a car that can be ‘driven’. We now know that other segments, including sports cars, will also suffer the disruption of these advanced technological systems.

Among them is Nissan, the Japanese manufacturer behind engineering works as famous as the Nissan GT-R and the 370Z. Takao Asami, Nissan’s Global Vice President for Research and Advanced Engineering, has stated that even these two sports cars will ultimately be brought onto the bandwagon of autonomous driving technology. Whether we like it or not, autonomous cars are on their way, and sooner or later even high-performance cars will employ this technology.

While for many this may be terrible news, Takao Asami says that autonomous technology could be adapted so that sports cars can ‘extract more capability and improve performance’. During the interview with the team at Auto Express, Asami emphasised that both vehicles would receive an autonomous system with a Track mode to guide the driver and be faster on the track, delivering fun behind the wheel.

While in a high-end powerful vehicle the autonomous driving system will boost performance, in an ordinary car this technology has been designed to improve comfort and safety. Furthermore, the driver will still be able to take control of the steering wheel whenever they wish, since the CEO of Nissan, Carlos Ghosn, is not currently interested in launching a driverless car.
