Bugatti has been very active in the speed record category. Over the weekend we learned that Guinness had taken the world record away from the Veyron Grand Sport for having disconnected the speed limiter. However, whether as a response or the result of a simple “coincidence”, Bugatti has reclaimed another record.

At just over 406 km/h, the Grand Sport Vitesse ran on the high-speed test track belonging to Volkswagen, in Ehra-Lessien, Germany, driven by Chinese test driver Anthony Liu, achieving the best world speed record for a convertible.

The same model of the Bugatti that set the record will also appear at the Shanghai Motor Show for the enjoyment of attending visitors. But Bugatti plans to put into production a limited series of eight units called the World Record Car, with a sale price of nearly two million euros.

This Veyron has not had any changes to its engine. It keeps the 8-litre, 16-cylinder unit from the Super Sport, with 1,184 CV of power. What has been worked on is the aerodynamics, thanks to which the record was achieved; to prevent the turbulence generated in the cabin at those speeds, Bugatti has used a small rear spoiler and some aerodynamic adjustments. Will Guinness take the necessary precautions before officially recognising it?
