The current Volkswagen Passat could disappear and become an electric car

Volkswagen is considering turning the Passat into a fully electric car, possibly based on the ID VIZZION, from 2022 onwards

The Volkswagen Passat may be about to undergo a complete change that will turn it into a completely different model. The need for clean mobility ready to meet the challenges of the future has led Volkswagen’s managers to consider a fully electric model. A radical change that could arrive in a few years and that will mark a before and after for one of the most important cars in the brand’s history.

In the US market, the Passat underwent a major facelift to bring it closer to the European version not long ago. The exterior look of the Passat has improved a lot compared to the previous version, but it has not really caught on and cannot become the bestseller they are looking for in the US division of Volkswagen. In fact, sales last year fell to 14,123 units, compared with the 117,023 units sold in 2012.

It must be said that American brands have eliminated several of their saloons for sales drops much less dramatic than these. That said, Volkswagen still wants to keep this iconic model going a little longer, as it remains important in the European market. We do not know what this electric model will be like, but we have a clue.

In 2018 Volkswagen presented the concept car ID VIZZION, an electric saloon built on an MEB platform, and according to what they said at the time, it would be the basis on which a new car will be developed in 2022. The statements about the new generation of the Volkswagen electric Passat offer a clue about the model that could ultimately become this new proposal.

The prototype featured a 111 kWh battery located under the floor of the car. This powered two motors that provided all-wheel drive and a power output of 225 kW, equivalent to 306 CV working together. The range offered by this model is 665 kilometres, measured under the new European driving cycle.

This prototype may be the basis on which the new Passat is built, which will certainly become something completely different for a model we have seen on our streets and roads for decades.
