The Cybertruck from Tesla comes standard with wireless charging

Wireless charging will be the solution to a problem that will arise once fully autonomous driving becomes a reality, if that day actually arrives in the more or less near future

For a long time now there has been talk of equipping electric vehicles with an inductive wireless charging system, similar to the one already found in many mobile phones, so that drivers no longer have to keep plugging and unplugging their vehicles from a charging point.

Although this technology already exists, it has not yet caught on, for two fundamental reasons: the lower charging power it supports, which requires more time to complete the whole process, and the loss of efficiency compared with using a cable. These two important drawbacks outweigh the greater convenience these kinds of systems offer.

There is, however, an important additional advantage that until now has not been considered and that could lead some manufacturers to start implementing wireless charging in their vehicles: and Tesla would be one of them.

Your Tesla charges itself

The American manufacturer continues to work on developing its fully autonomous driving system and is convinced that, sooner or later, its vehicles will be able to travel from one place to another without the intervention of a human driver. If that eventually happens one day, something that remains to be seen, autonomous driving will then face an additional challenge. The vehicle will need to be able to recharge itself, since there will be no human driver to connect it to a fast charging point such as the Superchargers of Tesla itself.

It is precisely there that wireless charging comes in as the most feasible solution to this problem. In this way, vehicles could position themselves on a charging pad set into the ground, thereby recovering the range lost during their journeys.

Probably thinking about that hypothetical future, a user of the Cybertruck Owners Club has discovered that the engineers at Tesla have built into the battery pack of this electric pickup the connectors needed to implement a wireless charging system in the future. In this way, once the technology evolves, the American manufacturer will have the option of retrofitting all Cybertruck units already sold.

It must be made clear, however, that this does not mean the Cybertruck from Tesla will definitely be equipped with a wireless charging system. But if the company ever considers it worthwhile, it will at least have the possibility of doing so thanks to these connectors. Time will tell how all of this develops and what actually ends up happening.
