The end of the Testarossa: Ferrari may lose the rights to the name

The Italian brand is facing the German courts to keep the rights to the name of one of its most iconic and important cars if it does not use it

It is one of the most iconic cars from the Cavallino Rampante brand, a symbol of 1980s luxury that has outgrown the company itself and become an icon of an era when supercars were starting to be recognised. Film and television turned it into a legend, when Sonny Crockett drove one or when it appeared as a symbol of power and elegance in several films. Now, Ferrari faces a serious problem: a toy manufacturer in Nuremberg wants to get hold of the name and take it away from the Italian brand.

Apparently, this businessman is clinging to the fact that Ferrari has not protected the name ‘Testarossa‘ over the last five years, so it could lose the right to use it. This surprises us, but apparently it is something that could happen. If a brand is not used frequently and with good reason, the owner could lose the rights of use. For that very reason, film production companies have to make films featuring certain characters in order to keep the rights, for example.

The judges’ decision seems to be in line with this, so Ferrari could soon lose all rights to the name ‘Testarossa‘, although it still has the option of appealing that ruling and taking the case to another court. The Italian brand argues that the trademark is properly protected because repairs and maintenance of the older models that are still in service are being supported, and apparently there are not few of them.

The Ferrari Testarossa could end up disappearing and remaining only as a memory, and who knows whether even that could be erased, because legal matters are quite complicated and can cause many problems for Ferrari. But if the brand does not act quickly and decides to press ahead with its arguments, the next Testarossa we see on the market could be a razor, a chocolate bun or anything else that the company registering the name comes up with. Well, in the worst case, we could finally have a Testarrosa at home. Do you think it will finally happen?
