The fastest Opel in the world: Opel Insignia Sports Tourer OPC by Steinmetz

The Nardo speed ring in Italy is the setting for a new top-speed record for a tuner car. Just as the Mercedes GLK V12 by Brabus became the fastest SUV, another estate car has become the fastest in its class in the world. The test, organised every year by Continental and Auto Bild, saw the Opel Insignia Sports Tourer, tuned by Steinmetz, reach a top speed of 287.4 km/h, making it the fastest estate car and the fastest Opel in the world.

The aesthetic upgrades applied to the Insignia included a new grille, front and rear spoilers and 20-inch wheels with a high speed rating. Up to this point, this Opel could pass for the work of any tuning enthusiast.

The most interesting part comes when you lift the bonnet. A larger turbocharger has been fitted, the intercooler and exhausts have been modified. Internally, the engine received new injectors and a reprogrammed ECU. As a result, the Opel reaches 400 horsepower, with around 550 Nm of torque.

Given these record credentials, you’d better take a good look at what kind of “estate car” pulls up next to you at a traffic light.
