The Ferrari SP38 is presented as a one-off based on the 488 GTB

Ferrari has unveiled the new SP38, a one-off based on the already well-known 488 GTB. This unique model features important aesthetic improvements.

Ferrari has many reasons to be a very special and exclusive brand but, without a doubt, that reputation is heightened by its one-offs. The Italian firm has been creating unique vehicles for its most special clients since time immemorial, customers who are willing to pay more to obtain a Cavallino Rampante that is one of a kind in the world. Over the years, we have seen several one-offs from the brand based on the 458 Italia or the F12, but on this occasion we find that the Ferrari 488 GTB has been used to bring the SP38 to life.

The Ferrari SP38 was born not only to please one client, but also to show the world a completely unique design that commemorates, in many respects, some of the brand’s most iconic models. To this end, the Italian firm has put all its effort into offering a completely new bodywork, in which many elements make this one-off have little or nothing to do with a conventional 488 GTB.

The first thing that catches our attention is that, despite sharing the same base, the SP38 displays a much more aggressive and sporty look, which gives it greater width. The front keeps the similarities in the bonnet intact, as the design department at Ferrari has completely changed the light clusters, offering a more aggressive appearance with more restrained dimensions, which remind us of the headlights of other models from the past.

The front splitter has also undergone a series of changes, adopting this more radical aesthetic and giving way to a huge grille guarded by the iconic Cavallino Rampante. However, where we find the most significant changes is at the rear, where the Italian engineers have drawn inspiration from the acclaimed Ferrari F40. The engine cover adopts a completely new design, simulating the slats that the supercar of yesteryear featured; at the same time, the rear lights are doubled to maintain the unique style that the F40 had.

The twin exhaust outlet so characteristic of the 488 GTB remains present on this one-off, except that on this occasion they rise to sit above the diffuser, just below the rear lights. The rest of the rear end also features a new design, both visually and aerodynamically, but Ferrari keeps the heart that powers the 488 fully intact.

The 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 is responsible for bringing the SP38 to life, producing 670 CV and 700 Nm of torque. These figures allow this exclusive Cavallino to reach 100 km/h in just 3 seconds and a top speed of 331 km/h, performance more than sufficient to rank both the 488 GTB and the SP38 among the fastest supercars in their segment.

However, the Italian firm does not seek to offer a more radical tuning with this one-off, but rather an exclusive and unique design, which keeps the legacy of its predecessors fully intact. The exact amount this fortunate client paid the Italian brand is unknown, but we are certain it was not small, since its owner takes home a genuine museum piece.
