Volkswagen is determined not to repeat the mistakes made with the current generation of its electric models in order to regain the prominence in the sector that it is not enjoying at present.

The German manufacturer plans to launch its next generation of electric vehicles from 2028. These new electric models from Volkswagen will be based on the new SSP platform –Scalable Systems Platform-. This was announced by the company’s current Chief Executive Officer, Thomas Schäfer, during an event celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of one of the brand’s most iconic models, the Volkswagen Golf. Although Schäfer has not revealed specific details about the model with which this platform will debut, Herbert Diess, the company’s former Chief Executive Officer, already announced at the time that it would be an SUV.

The SSP will replace the internal combustion engine platforms MQB, MSB and MLB, as well as the electric vehicle platforms MEB and PPE. Volkswagen has confirmed that it will be a platform with different versions for different vehicle segments. Although originally Volkswagen’s management planned to introduce this new platform with an exceptionally efficient saloon in 2026, everything suggests that they later decided to focus on an SUV, delaying its debut until the end of this decade. Now, Schäfer has specified that this launch will take place in 2028.

The truth is that the electric models of the ID. family based on the MEB platform are not selling as well as expected, so Volkswagen needs to avoid further delays in the launch of the next-generation electric models based on the SSP platform. Between January and March, sales of electric vehicles from the Volkswagen Group in Europe fell by 24%, forcing the company to reduce production at its plants in Emden and Zwickau.

The transition to electric mobility is proving an uphill struggle for the German manufacturer

Volkswagen now faces pressure from its investors, who demand good results. The company’s share price has not risen much over the last year and, in October, it even fell below 100 euros. Any further setback in the deployment of the SSP, and therefore of the most advanced next-generation electric vehicles, could once again affect investor confidence.

Despite having changed the body style of its first SSP-based electric vehicle, Volkswagen continues to plan this vehicle under the Trinity project. The company has confirmed that this model will be produced at its Zwickau plant. In addition, has also given the green light to series production of the new generation of the Golf, which will be fully electric and based on the SSP platform. This model will be produced at the company’s main plant in Wolfsburg, Germany.

Following the mistakes made with the brand’s current generation of electric models, Volkswagen is working to ensure that the next generation, based on the SSP platform, lives up to the expectations of both the market and investors. The successful implementation of its new platform will be crucial for the future of the company, especially at a time when competition is growing and buyers’ demands are also rising.
