The first solar-panel bus, ready in Germany under the Sono brand
The city of Munich will host the debut of the first bus with solar panels, which will achieve considerable fuel savings in daily service.

The incorporation of solar panels in electric vehicles is becoming quite common. More and more cars are fitted with this kind of energy supply system, even if only in a concept version. Its real-world applications are increasingly standard, and it is expected that they will soon have a practical function. In the field of buses, a major advance has just been confirmed.
It is a bus equipped with a complex system of solar panels that capture the energy of the sun and convert it into electricity to improve its range. The solar bus has begun running on the streets of Munich and is undergoing trials to check whether it is as effective as expected.

A trailer with solar panels
The bus is equipped with a trailer that carries several solar panels on its roof. Specifically, there are 20 semi-flexible panels covering an area of 12 square metres. With these panels, the bus manages to generate 2,000 watts of energy, which help improve the vehicle’s energy balance.

The charge regulator uses an algorithm that optimises the charging and transfers the energy to the battery as efficiently as possible. The energy obtained is stored in a 24-volt battery and is not intended to power the engine; instead, it is directed to the climate control and ventilation system. In this way, it reduces energy consumption and helps maintain range.
The trailer can be used on buses with an electric drivetrain as well as diesel ones. Thanks to this system, a considerable fuel saving is expected, both for buses with combustion engines and for those using electric motors and batteries.
Sono continues with this project on its path toward the electrification of transport. Its first electric model is the Sono Sion, which will enter production shortly. This vehicle has around 14,000 orders, so it will reach the market with a considerable number of cars sold and the momentum to establish itself there.
